We were on a road trip to Colorado Springs for a wedding. It was about a 13 hour drive. Hays, Kansas seemed like a good place to stop for the night. A google search showed multiple hotels, restaurants, and gas stations on Vine Street just off Interstate 70.
We chose the Quality Inn because it had a free hot breakfast and was a Choice Hotel. We made a reservation from the road. It was late and we were tired. Otherwise, we would have driven by and made our choice based on the neighborhood and appearance of the hotel.
The Quality Inn is small and doesn’t look like much from the outside and the neighborhood is questionable. Parking is in the back of the building. The building slows some wear.We had a room on the second floor with two double beds. We were expecting the worst as our first impression was not good. But, the room seemed clean. It was was pretty dinged up and not very attractive. It was very small but had everything we needed.
We were able to watch a little tv and drink a few beers to relax before going to bed. We slept well – the bed was very comfortable and the room was very quiet. We went downstairs and had breakfast: waffles, biscuits and gravy, bacon, scrambled eggs, yogurt, cereal, toast, bagels, donuts, juices, fruit, and coffee. It was a very nice spread.Bathing and dressing was tricky. It was very crowded. Beware the hot water – it can get scalding hot quickly! Our room had a small closet with hangers, iron, and ironing board. There was a tiny sink with coffee maker and essentials. We had enough basic clean towels – only one washcloth and one bar of soap.
We had a small dresser with drawers and a small HDTV. There was a small table and two chairs. There was an easy chair in the corner with a lamp. We had a window with room darkening drapes.
The beds and pillows were very plush and comfortable. The linens clean. We had a nightstand between the beds with a lamp, alarm clock, and electric plugin receptacles. Free WIFI but we did not use it.
The lobby had a small business center and coffee nook. No cookies, but there was a little cookie baking oven there. We may have missed the cookies.
The breakfast room is small but adequate.
Free USA Today papers were available. There is an indoor pool and hot tub but we did not see it.
The Quality Inn Hays, Kansas is not for anyone who is finicky but it is an inexpensive and convenient place for a quick overnight stay.
Pros: Employees were extremely friendly. Beds are very comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Inexpensive. Relatively clean.
Cons: Small worn out rooms. Possibly unsafe parking area.
