Sam and Beth are an unlikely couple but one of their friends thinks they could be very happy together. The friend sets them up for a blind date but they are just not attracted to each other and it is a very uncomfortable dinner. On the way home, Beth is in a terrible car accident and Sam witnesses it. He stays with her until the paramedics come. That night, a very fragile bond is created between the two.
Sam can’t stop thinking about Beth and visits her in the hospital. Beth becomes dependent on Sam for emotional support. As Beth recovers, they find that they are more compatible than they thought. They discover a common love for music and overwhelming physical attraction.
Problems arise that could potentially destroy their relationship. Beth’s mother is very controlling and feels Sam is not good enough for Beth. Sam has baggage. He has never recovered from a failed love affair with a married woman. He has a daughter from that affair who he is not allowed to see. Beth is fighting for her independence from her mother and Sam fears Beth will jilt him.
This is a really good story. The common theme seems to be what to do when you have a second chance at love. The characters are quirky and have relationship problems. Beth’s Aunt Sunshine broke up with her “one and only guy” years ago when he had an affair with her sister who is Beth’s mom. Aunt Sunshine has never forgiven Beth’s mom and they do not get along. Beth’s parent’s relationship is strained by their newly emptied nest and Beth’s struggle for independence. Sam has trust issues. Beth is a meddler and often gets herself into trouble with the people she loves. There are dozens of problems to resolve.
If Not For You is book three in the New Beginnings series. The first was Last One Home followed by A Girl’s Guide to Moving On. The first two were about three sisters: Cassie, Karen, and Nichole. Each woman’s marriage is failing and each is given a second chance at love. Each woman needs to learn forgiveness and trust. The last book, If Not For You, is about a friend of one of the sisters and is also about second chances at love, forgiveness, and trust.
