It’s beautiful but will it ever end!?!?
Freezing cold temperatures! Long, dark, cold nights. Gray, cloudy, frigid, dreary, dreary days – day after day after day. Bare, ugly trees. Snow, ice, frost. Bad weather just keeps coming. Colds and flu everywhere. Cabin fever. Static Electricity everywhere! Chapped lips and hands. Wearing heavy sweaters and coats everyday. Ugh. Where is the sunshine?
I’m depressed. I’m cold. I’m fat. I’m tired. I’m bored. I’m so hungry, I could eat a mountain of Lays Potato Chips! My fingers and toes are cold. My skin is dry. My hair is frizzy. My nose is dripping. I hate my clothes. Even my cats are depressed.
The Midwest in the winter can be a brutal place to live. Winter is just too long. Christmas was nice but the letdown is devastating.
Spring is coming but it might be a few more months so, a change in attitude is needed. Some gratitude for the charms of the winter season. Find some things to enjoy. There must be something about winter to like.
Okay, Twelve Things I Like About Winter:
- A roaring fire in the fireplace.
When it is cold outside, a warm, blazing fire is comforting. Sitting by a fire has been a natural habit of human beings since the beginning of time. All cultures of people and their pets are drawn to fire. It makes us feel safe and relaxed.
2. Drinking hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream and marshmallows.
Hot chocolate is a sweet and soothing cold weather treat. It is comforting to sip a warm cup of creamy hot chocolate. Holding and sipping a warm, sweet cup of hot chocolate will warm your stomach and your hands. Chocolate contains antioxidants which reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve blood flow. Make it from scratch to get maximum benefits and better taste. Hot cider, tea, and coffee are also warming to the tummy as well as the soul.
As I have gotten older, my feet and hands are always cold in the winter. I like thick warm, fuzzy socks, especially the ones that are infused with aloe to moisturize my feet as I wear them. It is so comforting to put my feet in soft, warm socks and they instantly make me feel warmer all over.
Curling up on the couch to watch TV is one of the best things about being home on a cold winter night or afternoon. Cuddling up in a warm blanket is very soothing. I like the feel of a soft blanket on my skin and it makes me feel safe and loved.
Valentine’s Day! Love. Hearts. Chocolate. Flowers. Candy. Champagne. Date night. Wine. Sex. I love it all.
6. Eating comfort food.
Comfort food tastes better in the winter. It is heavy and satisfying and warms your belly. I love putting a meal in the crockpot and cooking it all day. It smells wonderful and tastes delicious. Pot Roast, Beef Stew, Lasagna, Chicken and Noodles – all served with hot buttered rolls. Cinnamon rolls and oatmeal for breakfast. We all need some good tasting, stick to your ribs food and a little winter fat to keep us warm.
7. A short brisk walk in the cold.
It’s cold outside, but a brisk walk in fresh, crisp air is refreshing. It is mentally stimulating and mind clearing. It can wake you up and make you feel alive! Trying to keep warm while walking burns more calories too.
Taking a bath before bed can lead to better sleep. A comfortable, warm, sweet-smelling, luxurious bath is relaxing. Light some candles, play some soothing music, sip a glass of wine, close your eyes, and soak in a tub of warm, clean, water. Add some bath oil or butter to moisturize your skin while you soak.
Winter is the best time to do a crossword puzzle, read a book, knit, crochet, scrapbook, or binge watch Netflix. There seems to be more time to do these things when you are stuck in the house. Stimulate your mind with puzzles, games, and books.
10. Planning my summer vacations.
Winter is the best time to research and plan vacations. Dreaming about summer vacation is a lovely way to escape the doldrums of cabin fever.
Bedding and linens are on sale now. This a great time to shop and replace your bedding with fresh, new linens at low prices. Brighten up your bedroom and get a better night sleep with some pretty new bedding.
12. Making Soup.
Hot soup is easy to prepare and makes a tasty and filling meal. Soup tastes best this time of year and can help cure or at least help recovering from colds and flu. Chicken Soup has “magical” healing properties. I think all soups are very pleasing and homey.
Spring is just around the corner and I’m sure there will be things we don’t like about it – bugs, pollen, hay fever, rain. Every season has it ups and downs. Life is good. Change is good.
“No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.”
